AmsterdamvsDubai
Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Amsterdam right now, a founder is cycling home in the rain and doing the sums on what is left of a good year after tax, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Europe make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Amsterdam comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Dutch income tax and national insurance take about €97,187 a year, while Dubai takes €0.
Living costs: one person spends about €3,403 a month in Amsterdam and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, which is about €4,000 a year back in your pocket.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €78,657 in Amsterdam.
Families: international primary school costs about €15,200 a year per child in Amsterdam and €15,549 in Dubai, so school costs about €365 a year less per child in Amsterdam.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Amsterdam give it 64.
Getting home: 19 flights a week to Amsterdam, with Emirates.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €97,187 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while the Netherlands taxes the same salary in a single combined bracket system that mixes income tax with national insurance premiums.
For 2026 the rate is 35.75% on income up to €38,883, which includes 27.65% of national insurance premiums, then 37.56% up to €78,426 and 49.50% above that. The tax credits that soften the lower bands, the general tax credit and the labor tax credit, both fall to zero at this income, so the top rate applies to almost every extra euro.
Picture a founder in Amsterdam taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €86,435 and national insurance to about €10,751, so roughly €97,187 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €495 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 45% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Dutch income tax is charged on people who are Dutch tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dubai wins by about €211 a month
Dubai wins on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €2,288 a month in Amsterdam and €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 9% less here. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €3,430 against €3,911 a month, which is often the number that settles it for families.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €1,115 a month in Amsterdam against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €3,403 in Amsterdam and €3,069 in Dubai.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €3,975 a month in Amsterdam and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €7,404 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Dubai, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: about €365 a year less per child in Amsterdam
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about €15,200 per child in Amsterdam and €15,549 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about €2,448 in Amsterdam against €744 here. School fees are not where the case for Dubai is won, and with two children in primary school the difference is about €730 a year, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 29.9 in Amsterdam, so it is a little over half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Amsterdam 64.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about €101,192 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €78,657 in Amsterdam, a gap of €101,192 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.

The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and 19 flights a week to Amsterdam keep the Netherlands close whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay Dutch tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe Dutch tax depends on whether you count as a tax resident there, which Netherlands decides using its own tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than Amsterdam?
For one person, yes, by about €334 a month once rent is included, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices. Rent is the biggest single difference, and school fees widen the gap further for families.
Is Dubai safe for families?
Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 29.9 in Amsterdam, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 64 in Amsterdam.
How long is the flight from Amsterdam to Dubai?
About 7 hours 10 minutes nonstop from Amsterdam with Emirates, which flies the route 19 times a week.
Is moving to Dubai from Amsterdam worth it?
Amsterdam is hard to beat for charm. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
