Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated September 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Sydney right now, a founder is looking at a tax bill and a Medicare levy and doing the sums in their head, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Australians make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you the UAE is better, I have put the two countries head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in Australian dollars, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on an A$351,568 income, Australian income tax and the Medicare levy take about A$131,000 a year, while the UAE takes A$0.
Living costs: one person spends about A$3,838 a month in Australia and A$3,483 in the UAE, rent included, which is about A$4,200 a year back in your pocket.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about A$310,000 stays with you in the UAE against about A$174,000 in Australia.
Families: international primary school costs about A$25,842 a year per child in Australia and A$17,622 in the UAE.
Safety: UAE residents rate walking alone at night 85 out of 100, while people in Australia give it 40.
Getting home: Emirates flies to five Australian cities, and Sydney to Dubai takes about 13 hours 50 minutes.

1. Income tax: the UAE wins by about A$131,000 a year
The UAE wins this one outright, because it does not levy income tax on individuals, while Australia takes a share of the same income through income tax and then a 2% Medicare levy on top.
For 2026-27 the ATO taxes nothing on the first A$18,200, then 15% up to A$45,000, 30% up to A$135,000, 37% up to A$190,000 and 45% on everything above that. The Medicare levy of 2% is charged in addition to those rates.
Picture a founder taking A$351,568, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about A$124,076 and the Medicare levy to about A$7,031, so roughly A$131,107 goes every year, and on each extra A$1,000 they earn about A$470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 37% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Australian income tax is charged on people who are Australian residents for tax purposes, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residency rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: close to level
Rent is the closest line, and I would rather show it straight. On Numbeo’s September 2026 prices a one-bedroom apartment in a city center averages A$2,240 a month in Australia and A$2,147 in the UAE, while three bedrooms come to A$3,510 against A$3,774, so it is level and the difference gets made up elsewhere.
3. Everyday costs: the UAE wins by about A$4,200 a year
The UAE wins on day-to-day spending. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about A$1,598 a month in Australia against A$1,336 here, so with rent included the month costs about A$3,838 in Australia and A$3,483 in the UAE.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A monthly transport pass is A$68 instead of A$132, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is A$14 instead of A$25, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is A$76 instead of A$120, and a dozen eggs is A$4.39 instead of A$7.19.

Families feel it more. A family of four spends about A$5,754 a month before rent in Australia and A$4,693 in the UAE, and with a three-bedroom apartment in a city center the month comes to about A$9,263 against A$8,467, which is about A$9,600 a year back in your pocket.
4. School fees: the UAE wins by A$8,220 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and preschool is where the difference is widest. A year at an international primary school costs about A$25,842 per child in Australia and A$17,622 in the UAE, while a month of preschool runs about A$3,032 in Australia against A$806 here, a saving of A$2,226 every month. With two children in primary school the yearly gap alone is about A$16,500, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: the UAE wins, and residents feel it
The UAE wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 13.7 against 47.4 in Australia, so it is under a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, UAE residents score it 85 out of 100 and people in Australia 40.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about A$135,000 more in the UAE
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on A$351,568 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in a city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about A$309,764 in the UAE and about A$174,402 in Australia, a gap of A$135,362 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because more of your income stays with you and the month costs less.

Moving here does not mean leaving Australia behind. Emirates flies to Dubai from Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and the flight from Sydney takes about 13 hours 50 minutes with 21 flights a week, so family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder earning well in Australia. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about A$131,000 a year on A$351,568, and that is before a single bill.
The family weighing private school. Two children in international primary school cost about A$16,500 a year less in the UAE, and preschool alone saves about A$2,226 a month per child.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and flights from five Australian cities keep home reachable whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay Australian tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe Australian tax depends on whether you count as an Australian resident for tax purposes, which the ATO decides using a set of residency tests, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than Australia?
For one person, yes, by about A$354 a month once rent is included, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, and by about A$796 a month for a family of four in a three-bedroom apartment. Tax makes the far bigger difference.
Is Dubai safe for families?
The UAE’s crime index is 13.7 against 47.4 in Australia, and residents rate walking alone at night 85 out of 100 compared with 40 in Australia.
How long is the flight from Australia to Dubai?
About 13 hours 50 minutes from Sydney with Emirates, which flies the route 21 times a week and also serves Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Is moving to Dubai from Australia worth it?
Home will always be home. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
