Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 5 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
In the long summer light of Inverness, a business owner is looking at the year ahead and wondering how much of it will go to tax, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Scotland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Inverness comes out ahead. Numbeo notes that its Inverness figures rest on a small number of reports (23 contributors in the past 18 months) and that some are estimated, so I have left out the school fees and the monthly cost totals, which I could not verify, and kept the rest as a guide.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, Scottish income tax and National Insurance take about £83,124 a year, while Dubai takes £0.
Rent: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £997 a month in Inverness and £1,792 in Dubai’s city center, so Inverness is about £795 a month cheaper on rent alone.
What you keep: after tax and a year of one-bedroom rent, about £165,456 stays with you in Dubai against about £91,870 in Inverness.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Inverness give it 52.
Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Edinburgh and Glasgow, 7 times a week from each, in about 7 hours 25 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about £83,124 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Scotland sets its own income tax rates and, together with UK National Insurance, takes a share of the same salary twice.
For 2026/27 Scotland gives you the standard personal allowance of £12,570, then taxes income at 19% up to £16,537, 20% up to £29,526, 21% up to £43,662, 42% up to £75,000, 45% up to £125,140 and 48% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above.
Picture a founder in Inverness taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £77,374 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £83,124 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £500 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 44% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Scottish income tax is charged on people who count as Scottish taxpayers, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Inverness is about £795 a month cheaper
I would rather show this one straight: Inverness is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £997 a month in Inverness against £1,792 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about £795 a month, or £9,539 a year. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes £1,716 against £3,375 a month, so Inverness stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is much smaller than the tax bill above.
Because the Inverness figures rest on few reports, treat the rents as a guide and check current listings before you decide.
3. Everyday prices: how the basics compare
The small things are what new arrivals notice first, and they look like this: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is £16 in Inverness and £10 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is £51 in Inverness against £61 in Dubai, a dozen eggs is £2.83 in Inverness and £2.50 in Dubai, a pound of chicken is £3.05 in Inverness and £3.10 in Dubai, a pound of beef is £5.50 in Inverness and £4.40 in Dubai, a fast-food combo meal is £7.58 in Inverness against £7.13 in Dubai and a monthly transport pass is £46 in Inverness against £56 in Dubai. Not every item is cheaper here, and I would rather you saw that than assume it.

4. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 38.0 in Inverness, which puts Dubai at well under half of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Inverness 52.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
5. What you keep: about £73,586 more in Dubai
Put tax and rent together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and rent they keep about £165,456 in Dubai and about £91,870 in Inverness, a gap of £73,586 in a single year. I have left everyday costs out here because I could not verify a monthly everyday-cost figure for Inverness, so this counts only tax and rent. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.

Moving here does not mean leaving Scotland behind. Emirates currently flies to Dubai from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, 7 times a week from each, and each journey takes about 7 hours 25 minutes. I could not find an Emirates service from Inverness itself, so you would travel to one of those two airports or connect elsewhere, and family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach. Check emirates.com for the current timetable.
Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in Inverness. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about £83,124 a year on £186,958, and that is before you count a single bill.
The professional paying half of every extra pound. At this income about 50% of each extra pound goes in Scottish income tax and National Insurance, while in Dubai none of it does.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow keep Scotland within reach whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay Scottish tax if I live in Dubai?
