MadridvsDubai
Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Madrid right now, a founder is finishing a long lunch and a longer working day and wondering what a big contract is really worth after the tax bill, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Europe make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Madrid comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Spanish income tax and social security take about €85,137 a year, while Dubai takes €0.
Living costs: one person spends about €2,131 a month in Madrid and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, so day-to-day life costs about €11,253 a year more in Dubai, a gap the tax saving more than covers.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €106,000 in Madrid.
Families: international primary school costs about €15,736 a year per child in Madrid and €15,549 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Madrid give it 70.
Getting home: 14 flights a week to Madrid, with Emirates.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €85,137 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Spain takes a share of the same salary through income tax and social security, and the income tax itself is split between a national scale and a regional scale set by the Community of Madrid.
Spanish income tax (IRPF) is progressive, with the national scale and the Madrid regional scale each rising to their own top rate, and on a €216,675 salary the two together come to about €80,796 a year. Social security is much lighter than the income tax, at about €4,341 a year, because employee contributions stop at a maximum monthly base of about €5,101, which is a genuine advantage of the Spanish system and one I would rather point out than hide.
Picture a founder in Madrid taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €80,796 and social security to about €4,341, so roughly €85,137 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €431 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 39% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Spanish income tax is charged on people who are Spanish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Madrid costs about €753 a month less
This is the one line where Madrid comes out ahead on the sticker price. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,323 a month in Madrid and €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 57% more in Dubai. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €2,435 in Madrid against €3,911 a month in Dubai. Over a year that rent gap is worth about €9,038, which is real money until you set it beside the €85,137 of tax in the first section, because the tax gap is several times larger.
3. Everyday costs: Madrid is about €185 a month cheaper
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €809 a month in Madrid against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €2,131 in Madrid and €3,069 in Dubai.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €2,905 a month in Madrid and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €5,340 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Month to month, Madrid costs less than Dubai, and that is fine, because the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by €186 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about €15,736 per child in Madrid and €15,549 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about €590 in Madrid against €744 here. With two children in primary school that is about €370 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 29.0 in Madrid, so it is a little over half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Madrid 70.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about €73,885 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €106,000 in Madrid, a gap of €73,885 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because the tax gap is larger than the whole difference, since Madrid costs less to live in month to month.

Moving here does not mean leaving Spain behind. Emirates flies between Dubai and Madrid 14 times a week, which is two flights a day, and the journey takes about 7 hours 50 minutes, so family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within easy reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in Madrid. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about €85,137 a year on €216,675, and that is before you count a single bill.
The founder who loves Spain but not the tax bill. Madrid costs less than Dubai month to month, but the tax gap is so much larger that you still keep about €73,885 more a year in Dubai.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and 14 flights a week to Madrid keep Spain close whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay Spanish tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe Spanish tax depends on whether you count as a tax resident there, which Spain decides using its own tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than Madrid?
Not month to month. For one person Madrid costs about €938 a month less once rent is included, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices. What changes the picture is tax, because on a €216,675 income you keep about €73,885 more a year in Dubai, as the UAE does not charge income tax on individuals.
Is Dubai safe for families?
Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 29.0 in Madrid, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 70 in Madrid.
How long is the flight from Madrid to Dubai?
About 7 hours 50 minutes nonstop from Madrid with Emirates, which flies the route 14 times a week.
Is moving to Dubai from Madrid worth it?
Madrid will always be Madrid. The real question is whether the tax bill is still worth the life it pays for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
