Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Stockholm right now, a founder is watching a dark winter afternoon arrive early and doing the sums on a tax bill that takes about half of every extra krona, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Europe make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in Swedish kronor, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Stockholm comes out ahead.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on a SEK 2,443,500 income, Swedish income tax takes about SEK 1,048,369 a year, while Dubai takes SEK 0.

Living costs: one person spends about SEK 30,280 a month in Stockholm and SEK 34,610 in Dubai, rent included, so day-to-day life costs about SEK 51,959 a year more in Dubai, a gap the tax saving more than covers.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about SEK 2,028,193 stays with you in Dubai against about SEK 1,031,783 in Stockholm.

Families: international primary school costs about SEK 168,269 a year per child in Stockholm and SEK 175,355 in Dubai, so school costs about SEK 7,086 a year less per child in Stockholm.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Stockholm give it 46.

Getting home: 7 flights a week to Stockholm, with Emirates.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about SEK 1,048,369 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Sweden takes a share of the same salary through a local tax that everyone pays and a national state tax on top for higher earners.

In Stockholm the combined municipal and regional rate for 2026 is 30.55% (18.22% municipal plus 12.33% regional, before any church fee), and taxable income above SEK 643,000 pays a further 20% state tax. A basic deduction and a job tax credit soften the bill slightly, and the 7% employee pension fee is credited back against tax, so it does not add to the total.

Picture a founder in Stockholm taking SEK 2,443,500, which is about $250,000 at 9.7740 kronor to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. After the job tax credit, municipal and state tax come to about SEK 1,048,369 a year, and on each extra SEK 1,000 they earn about SEK 505 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 43% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Swedish income tax is charged on people who are Swedish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Stockholm costs about SEK 6,187 a month less

This is the one line where Stockholm comes out ahead on the sticker price. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages SEK 17,241 a month in Stockholm and SEK 23,419 in Dubai on Numbeo’s August 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 36% more in Dubai. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes SEK 29,537 in Stockholm against SEK 44,110 a month in Dubai. Over a year that rent gap is worth about SEK 74,243, which is real money until you set it beside the SEK 1,048,369 of tax in the first section, because the tax gap is several times larger.

3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics

One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about SEK 13,039 a month in Stockholm against SEK 11,191 here, so with rent included the month costs about SEK 30,280 in Stockholm and SEK 34,610 in Dubai.

The small things look like this. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is SEK 186 in Stockholm and SEK 127 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is SEK 1,026 against SEK 801, and a monthly transport pass is SEK 1,085 against SEK 733.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about SEK 47,200 a month in Stockholm and SEK 39,360 in Dubai, and about SEK 76,736 against SEK 83,470 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Month to month, Stockholm costs less than Dubai, and that is fine, because the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.

4. School fees: about SEK 7,086 a year less per child in Stockholm

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about SEK 168,269 per child in Stockholm and SEK 175,355 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about SEK 1,691 in Stockholm against SEK 8,396 here. School fees are not where the case for Dubai is won, and with two children in primary school the difference is about SEK 14,200 a year, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 46.1 in Stockholm, so it is about a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Stockholm 46.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about SEK 996,410 more in Dubai

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on SEK 2,443,500 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about SEK 2,028,193 in Dubai and about SEK 1,031,783 in Stockholm, a gap of SEK 996,410 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because the tax gap is larger than the whole difference, since Stockholm costs less to live in month to month.

Questions people ask me

Do I still pay Swedish tax if I live in Dubai?

Whether you owe Swedish tax depends on whether you count as a tax resident there, which Sweden decides using its own tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

Is Dubai cheaper than Stockholm?

Not month to month. For one person Stockholm costs about SEK 4,330 a month less once rent is included, on Numbeo’s August 2026 prices. What changes the picture is tax, because on a SEK 2,443,500 income you keep about SEK 996,410 more a year in Dubai, as the UAE does not charge income tax on individuals.

Is Dubai safe for families?

Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 46.1 in Stockholm, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 46 in Stockholm.

How long is the flight from Stockholm to Dubai?

About 7 hours 15 minutes nonstop from Dubai to Stockholm with Emirates, which flies the route 7 times a week.

Is moving to Dubai from Stockholm worth it?

Stockholm is clean, calm and well run. The real question is whether the numbers still add up for the life you want, and if they made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
