Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Birmingham right now, a business owner is walking out of a meeting in the Jewellery Quarter and quietly doing the sum of what the year really left behind, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across the UK make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Birmingham comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, UK income tax and National Insurance take about £76,100 a year, while Dubai takes £0.
Living costs: one person spends about £1,895 a month in Birmingham and £2,648 in Dubai, rent included, so day-to-day life costs about £9,037 a year more in Dubai, a gap the tax saving more than covers.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about £155,182 stays with you in Dubai against about £88,138 in Birmingham.
Families: international primary school costs about £17,962 a year per child in Birmingham and £13,417 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Birmingham give it 25.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop between Birmingham and Dubai 14 times a week, in about 7 hours 10 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about £76,100 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while the UK takes a share of the same salary twice, once through income tax and again through National Insurance.
For 2026/27 the UK gives you a personal allowance of £12,570, taxes income above that at 20% up to £50,270, then at 40% up to £125,140 and at 45% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above.
Picture a founder in Birmingham taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £70,334 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £76,084 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 41% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

UK income tax is charged on people who are UK tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Birmingham costs about £752 a month less
Rent is where Birmingham comes out ahead on the sticker price. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £1,040 a month in Birmingham and £1,792 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 72% more in Dubai. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes £1,573 in Birmingham against £3,375 a month in Dubai. Over a year that rent gap is worth about £9,020, which is real money until you set it beside the £76,084 of tax in the first section, because the tax gap is several times larger.
3. Everyday costs: about the same in both cities
Everyday costs are close to level. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about £854 a month in Birmingham against £856 here, so with rent included the month costs about £1,895 in Birmingham and £2,648 in Dubai.

The small things look like this. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is £16 in Birmingham and £10 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is £76 against £61, and a monthly transport pass is £70 against £56. Not every item is cheaper here, since the fast-food combo comes out lower in Birmingham, and I would rather you saw that than assume it.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about £2,970 a month in Birmingham and £3,012 in Dubai, and about £4,543 against £6,386 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Month to month, Birmingham costs less than Dubai, and that is fine, because the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by £4,545 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about £17,962 per child in Birmingham and £13,417 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about £1,200 in Birmingham against £642 here. With two children in primary school that is about £9,120 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 64.0 in Birmingham, so Dubai’s score is about 25% of the Birmingham level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Birmingham 25.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about £67,044 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about £155,182 in Dubai and about £88,138 in Birmingham, a gap of £67,044 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because the tax gap is larger than the whole difference, since Birmingham costs less to live in month to month.

Questions people ask me
Do I still pay UK tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe UK tax depends on whether you count as a UK tax resident, which the UK decides using a set of tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move.
