Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 5 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Under the walls of Kilkenny Castle on a quiet weekday, a founder is checking how much of this year's income Revenue will take, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Ireland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Kilkenny comes out ahead.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Irish income tax, USC and PRSI take about €96,416 a year, while Dubai takes €0.

Rent: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,317 a month in Kilkenny and €2,077 in Dubai, so Kilkenny is about €760 a month cheaper on rent alone.

What you keep: after tax and a year of one-bedroom rent, about €191,756 stays with you in Dubai against about €104,457 in Kilkenny.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Kilkenny give it 56.

Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop to Dublin every day, and from Kilkenny you connect or travel through Dublin.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €96,416 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Ireland takes a share of the same salary three times, through income tax, the Universal Social Charge and PRSI social insurance.

For 2026 a single person in Ireland pays 20% income tax on the first €44,000 and 40% on everything above it, less personal and employee tax credits of €2,000 each. The Universal Social Charge (USC) adds 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% up to €28,700, 3% up to €70,044 and 8% above that, and employee PRSI takes about 4.2% of all earnings.

Picture a founder in Kilkenny taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €73,870, the Universal Social Charge to about €13,400 and PRSI to about €9,182, so roughly €96,416 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €522 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 45% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Irish income tax is charged on people who are Irish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Kilkenny is about €760 a month cheaper

I would rather show this one straight: Kilkenny is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,317 a month in Kilkenny against €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about €760 a month, or €9,121 a year.

Numbeo notes that its Kilkenny figures rest on a small number of reports (20 contributors in the past 18 months), so treat the rents as a guide and check current listings before you decide.

3. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 32.7 in Kilkenny, so it is about half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Kilkenny 56.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

4. What you keep: about €87,298 more in Dubai

Put tax and rent together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and rent they keep about €191,756 in Dubai and about €104,457 in Kilkenny, a gap of €87,298 in a single year. I have left everyday costs out here because Numbeo does not publish a monthly everyday-cost figure for Kilkenny, so this counts only tax and rent. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.
