Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Wellington right now, a founder is working out how much of the next dollar earned the tax office keeps, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Wellington founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in New Zealand dollars, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Wellington comes out ahead.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on an NZ$434,103 income, New Zealand income tax and the ACC earners’ levy take about NZ$151,000 a year, while Dubai takes NZ$0.

Living costs: one person spends about NZ$3,999 a month in Wellington and NZ$6,165 in Dubai, rent included, so the month itself is about NZ$2,170 cheaper in Wellington.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about NZ$360,000 stays with you in Dubai against about NZ$235,000 in Wellington.

Families: international primary school costs about NZ$23,026 a year per child in Wellington and NZ$31,156 in Dubai.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Wellington give it 57.

Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Auckland and Christchurch, and the nonstop flight from Auckland takes about 17 hours 25 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about NZ$151,000 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while New Zealand taxes income on a sliding scale and charges an ACC earners’ levy on top, which funds the national accident insurance scheme.

For 2026-27 Inland Revenue taxes the first NZ$15,600 at 10.5%, income up to NZ$53,500 at 17.5%, up to NZ$78,100 at 30%, up to NZ$180,000 at 33% and everything above that at 39%. The ACC earners’ levy adds 1.75% on earnings up to NZ$156,641, which tops out at NZ$2,741.

Picture a founder in Wellington taking NZ$434,103, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about NZ$148,378 and the ACC levy to about NZ$2,741, so roughly NZ$151,119 goes every year, and on each extra NZ$1,000 they earn about NZ$390 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 35% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

New Zealand income tax is charged on people who are New Zealand tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Wellington is cheaper by about NZ$2,010 a month

On rent Wellington comes in lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages NZ$2,169 a month in Wellington and NZ$4,181 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 48% less in Wellington, and three bedrooms in the center come to NZ$3,823 against NZ$7,838. The tax line below is where that gets made up, and it is far larger.

3. Everyday costs: Wellington is a little cheaper

Wellington comes in lower on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about NZ$1,830 a month in Wellington against NZ$1,984 here, so with rent included the month costs about NZ$3,999 in Wellington and NZ$6,165 in Dubai.

The small things are a mixed picture, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. In Dubai, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is NZ$22 instead of NZ$25, a dozen eggs is NZ$5.80 instead of NZ$12.31, a monthly transport pass is NZ$130 instead of NZ$181 and beef per pound is NZ$10.26 instead of NZ$12.22. In Wellington, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is NZ$115 instead of NZ$142 and a fast-food combo is NZ$16.10 instead of NZ$16.55.

For a family of four, everyday costs before rent come to about NZ$6,569 a month in Wellington and NZ$6,978 in Dubai, and about NZ$10,392 against NZ$14,816 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Wellington keeps the month lower, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.

4. School fees: primary is cheaper in Wellington, preschool is cheaper in Dubai

School is a mixed picture, and I would rather show it straight. A year at an international primary school costs about NZ$23,026 per child in Wellington and NZ$31,156 in Dubai, so primary fees are lower in Wellington. Preschool goes the other way, with a month costing about NZ$1,884 in Wellington against NZ$1,492 here, which is about NZ$392 a month less per child for families with little ones.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 33.4 in Wellington, so it is under half of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Wellington 57.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about NZ$125,000 more in Dubai

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on NZ$434,103 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about NZ$360,124 in Dubai and about NZ$234,996 in Wellington, a gap of NZ$125,128 in a single year. It is one number, and even though the month costs less in Wellington, it lines up with the biggest line above, because the tax you do not pay is far larger than any difference in the month.
