Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in New Zealand right now, a founder is working out how much of the next dollar earned the tax office keeps, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of New Zealanders make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you the UAE is better, I have put the two countries head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in New Zealand dollars, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where New Zealand comes out ahead.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on an NZ$434,103 income, New Zealand income tax and the ACC earners’ levy take about NZ$151,000 a year, while the UAE takes NZ$0.

Living costs: one person spends about NZ$3,629 a month in New Zealand and NZ$6,165 in the UAE, rent included, so the month itself is about NZ$2,540 cheaper in New Zealand.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about NZ$360,000 stays with you in the UAE against about NZ$239,000 in New Zealand.

Families: international primary school costs about NZ$28,817 a year per child in New Zealand and NZ$31,156 in the UAE.

Safety: UAE residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in New Zealand give it 41.

Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Auckland and Christchurch, and Auckland to Dubai takes about 17 hours 25 minutes nonstop.

1. Income tax: The UAE wins by about NZ$151,000 a year

The UAE wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while New Zealand taxes income on a sliding scale and charges an ACC earners’ levy on top, which funds the national accident insurance scheme.

For 2026-27 Inland Revenue taxes the first NZ$15,600 at 10.5%, income up to NZ$53,500 at 17.5%, up to NZ$78,100 at 30%, up to NZ$180,000 at 33% and everything above that at 39%. The ACC earners’ levy adds 1.75% on earnings up to NZ$156,641, which tops out at NZ$2,741.

Picture a founder in New Zealand taking NZ$434,103, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about NZ$148,378 and the ACC levy to about NZ$2,741, so roughly NZ$151,119 goes every year, and on each extra NZ$1,000 they earn about NZ$390 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 35% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

New Zealand income tax is charged on people who are New Zealand tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: New Zealand is cheaper by about NZ$2,250 a month

On rent New Zealand comes in lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in a city center averages NZ$1,928 a month in New Zealand and NZ$4,181 in the UAE on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 54% less in New Zealand, and three bedrooms in the center come to NZ$3,041 against NZ$7,838. The tax line below is where that gets made up, and it is far larger.

3. Everyday costs: New Zealand is cheaper

New Zealand comes in lower on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about NZ$1,701 a month in New Zealand against NZ$1,984 here, so with rent included the month costs about NZ$3,629 in New Zealand and NZ$6,165 in the UAE.

The small things are a mixed picture, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. In the UAE, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is NZ$22 instead of NZ$25, a dozen eggs is NZ$5.80 instead of NZ$10.78, a monthly transport pass is NZ$130 instead of NZ$181 and beef per pound is NZ$10.26 instead of NZ$11.35. In New Zealand, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is NZ$120 instead of NZ$142 and a fast-food combo is NZ$16.00 instead of NZ$16.55.

For a family of four, everyday costs before rent come to about NZ$6,173 a month in New Zealand and NZ$6,978 in the UAE, and about NZ$9,214 against NZ$14,816 once a three-bedroom apartment in a city center is included. New Zealand keeps the month lower, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.

4. School fees: primary is cheaper in New Zealand, preschool is cheaper in the UAE

School is a mixed picture, and I would rather show it straight. A year at an international primary school costs about NZ$28,817 per child in New Zealand and NZ$31,156 in the UAE, so primary fees are lower in New Zealand. Preschool goes the other way, with a month costing about NZ$1,561 in New Zealand against NZ$1,492 here, which is about NZ$69 a month less per child for families with little ones.

5. Safety: The UAE wins, and residents feel it

The UAE wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 48.8 in New Zealand, so it is under a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, UAE residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in New Zealand 41.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about NZ$121,000 more in the UAE

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on NZ$434,103 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in a city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about NZ$360,124 in the UAE and about NZ$239,439 in New Zealand, a gap of NZ$120,685 in a single year. It is one number, and even though the month costs less in New Zealand, it lines up with the biggest line above, because the tax you do not pay is far larger than any difference in the month.

You are still one flight from home

Moving here does not mean leaving New Zealand behind. Emirates flies to Dubai from Auckland and Christchurch, and the nonstop flight from Auckland takes about 17 hours 25 minutes with 7 flights a week, so family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach.

Who should make the move?

The founder earning well in New Zealand. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about NZ$151,000 a year on NZ$434,103, and that is before you count a single bill.

The family weighing private school. Primary fees are lower in New Zealand, so it is the tax line that carries the argument, worth about NZ$151,000 a year, while preschool costs about NZ$69 a month less per child in the UAE.

The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and Emirates flying to Dubai from Auckland and Christchurch keeps home reachable whenever you need it.

Questions people ask me

Do I still pay New Zealand tax if I live in Dubai?

Whether you owe New Zealand tax depends on whether you count as a New Zealand tax resident, which Inland Revenue decides using residence tests, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

Is Dubai cheaper than New Zealand?

On the monthly bills, no: one person spends about NZ$2,536 less a month in New Zealand once rent is included, on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices. The difference is tax, because the UAE charges nothing on personal income against about NZ$151,000 a year in New Zealand on NZ$434,103, which leaves about NZ$121,000 more with you in the UAE after a year of living costs.

Is Dubai safe for families?

The UAE’s crime index is 16.2 against 48.8 in New Zealand, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 41 in New Zealand.

How long is the flight from New Zealand to Dubai?

About 17 hours 25 minutes nonstop from Auckland with Emirates, which flies the route 7 times a week and also serves Christchurch.

Is moving to Dubai from New Zealand worth it?

New Zealand will always be New Zealand. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
