Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 5 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Looking up at Dundee Law, a founder who has built something good is working out how much of the next sale they will actually keep, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Scotland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Dundee comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, Scottish income tax and National Insurance take about £83,124 a year, while Dubai takes £0.
Rent: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £788 a month in Dundee and £1,792 in Dubai’s city center, so Dundee is about £1,004 a month cheaper on rent alone.
Living costs: one person spends about £1,559 a month in Dundee and £2,648 in Dubai, rent included, with everyday costs of £772 against £856 in Dubai.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about £155,182 stays with you in Dubai against about £85,119 in Dundee.
Families: a month of preschool costs about £1,480 in Dundee and £642 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Dundee give it 47.
Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Edinburgh and Glasgow, 7 times a week from each, in about 7 hours 25 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about £83,124 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Scotland sets its own income tax rates and, together with UK National Insurance, takes a share of the same salary twice.
For 2026/27 Scotland gives you the standard personal allowance of £12,570, then taxes income at 19% up to £16,537, 20% up to £29,526, 21% up to £43,662, 42% up to £75,000, 45% up to £125,140 and 48% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above.
Picture a founder in Dundee taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £77,374 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £83,124 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £500 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 44% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Scottish income tax is charged on people who count as Scottish taxpayers, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dundee is about £1,004 a month cheaper
I would rather show this one straight: Dundee is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £788 a month in Dundee against £1,792 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about £1,004 a month, or £12,043 a year. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes £1,252 against £3,375 a month, so Dundee stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is much smaller than the tax bill above.
3. Everyday costs: how a normal month compares
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about £772 a month in Dundee against £856 in Dubai, so with rent included the month costs about £1,559 in Dundee and £2,648 in Dubai. The month is cheaper in Dundee, and the question is how much of your income is left to pay for it once the tax has gone.

The small things are what new arrivals notice first, and they look like this: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is £16 in Dundee and £10 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is £61 in Dundee against £61 in Dubai, a dozen eggs is £4.16 in Dundee and £2.50 in Dubai, a pound of chicken is £3.26 in Dundee and £3.10 in Dubai, a pound of beef is £5.26 in Dundee and £4.40 in Dubai, a fast-food combo meal is £8.08 in Dundee against £7.13 in Dubai and a monthly transport pass is £44 in Dundee against £56 in Dubai. Not every item is cheaper here, and I would rather you saw that than assume it.

For a family of four the numbers follow the same pattern, with everyday costs before rent of about £2,727 a month in Dundee and £3,012 in Dubai, and about £3,979 against £6,386 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Dundee, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. Preschool: Dubai wins by £838 a month
For families with young children the next line on the budget is preschool. A month of private full-day preschool costs about £1,480 in Dundee and £642 in Dubai, which is about £10,060 a year per child. Numbeo has no figure for international primary school fees in Dundee, so I have left that out rather than guess.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 47.5 in Dundee, which puts Dubai at about a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Dundee 47.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about £70,063 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about £155,182 in Dubai and about £85,119 in Dundee, a gap of £70,063 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because the month is cheaper in Dundee while the tax bill is far larger.

Moving here does not mean leaving Scotland behind. Emirates currently flies to Dubai from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, 7 times a week from each, and each journey takes about 7 hours 25 minutes. I could not find an Emirates service from Dundee itself, so you would travel to one of those two airports or connect elsewhere, and family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach. Check emirates.com for the current timetable.
