ParisvsDubai
Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Paris right now, a founder is reading a payslip with a dozen lines on it and wondering how a €216,675 salary turned into so little take-home pay, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Europe make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Paris comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a €216,675 income, French income tax and social contributions take about €94,900 a year, while Dubai takes €0.
Living costs: one person spends about €2,391 a month in Paris and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, so day-to-day life costs about €8,133 a year more in Dubai, a gap the tax saving more than covers.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €93,083 in Paris.
Families: international primary school costs about €22,832 a year per child in Paris and €15,549 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Paris give it 36.
Getting home: 21 flights a week to Paris, with Emirates.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €94,900 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while France takes its share twice, once through income tax and again through a long list of social contributions.
For 2026 France taxes taxable income at 0% up to €11,600, then 11% up to €29,579, 30% up to €84,577, 41% up to €181,917 and 45% above that, after a 10% allowance for professional expenses that is capped at €14,555. Social contributions come on top, including the general social contribution (CSG) and CRDS at about 9.7% on most pay, plus the pension and related contributions that every employee pays.
Picture a founder in Paris taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €51,355 and social contributions to about €43,540, so roughly €94,895 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €540 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 44% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

French income tax is charged on people who are French tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Paris costs about €714 a month less
This is the one line where Paris comes out ahead on the sticker price. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,362 a month in Paris and €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 52% more in Dubai. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €2,909 in Paris against €3,911 a month in Dubai. Over a year that rent gap is worth about €8,570, which is real money until you set it beside the €94,895 of tax in the first section, because the tax gap is several times larger.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €1,029 a month in Paris against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €2,391 in Paris and €3,069 in Dubai.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €3,700 a month in Paris and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €6,609 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Month to month, Paris costs less than Dubai, and that is fine, because the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by €7,283 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about €22,832 per child in Paris and €15,549 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about €1,581 in Paris against €744 here. With two children in primary school that is about €14,566 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 58.0 in Paris, so it is under a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Paris 36.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about €86,800 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €93,083 in Paris, a gap of €86,765 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because the tax gap is larger than the whole difference, since Paris costs less to live in month to month.

Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in Paris. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about €94,900 a year on €216,675, and that is before you count a single bill.
The family weighing private school. International primary school costs about €22,832 a year per child in Paris and €15,549 in Dubai, so two children in school save about €14,600 a year.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and 21 flights a week to Paris keep France close whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay French tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe French tax depends on whether you count as a tax resident there, which France decides using its own tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than Paris?
Not month to month. For one person Paris costs about €678 a month less once rent is included, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices. What changes the picture is tax, because on a €216,675 income you keep about €86,800 more a year in Dubai, as the UAE does not charge income tax on individuals.
Is Dubai safe for families?
Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 58.0 in Paris, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 36 in Paris.
How long is the flight from Paris to Dubai?
About 7 hours 15 minutes nonstop from Paris Charles de Gaulle with Emirates, which flies the route 21 times a week.
Is moving to Dubai from Paris worth it?
Paris will always be Paris. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
