Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated September 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Boston right now, a founder is paying more than $3,400 a month for a one-bedroom apartment and thinking about a Massachusetts tax bill, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Boston founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on $250,000, Massachusetts income tax takes about $12,300 a year, while Dubai takes $0.

Living costs: one person spends about $4,919 a month in Boston and $3,541 in Dubai, rent included, which is about $16,500 a year back in your pocket.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about $207,500 stays with you in Dubai against about $178,700 in Boston, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way.

Families: international primary school costs about $36,004 a year per child in Boston and $17,941 in Dubai.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Boston give it 56.

Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop from Boston to Dubai with 6 flights a week, in about 12 hours 15 minutes.

All figures in US dollars. Tax is Massachusetts income tax on $250,000 of wages; rent, living costs and safety from Numbeo, September 2026. Federal tax is left out because US citizens file it either way. Not tax advice.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about $12,300 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Massachusetts charges 5% on wages and adds a further 4% surtax only on income above $1,107,750 for 2026, which a $250,000 salary never reaches.

Massachusetts lets a single filer subtract a $4,400 personal exemption, so a founder in Boston on $250,000 has $245,600 taxed at 5%, and the state bill comes to about $12,280 a year. On every extra $1,000 they earn, about $50 goes to Massachusetts, and that is before federal tax, which US citizens file wherever they live, and before payroll taxes.

Massachusetts income tax is charged on Massachusetts residents, so once your home is in Dubai there is no state line waiting to replace it, although US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Dubai wins by about $1,000 a month

Dubai wins on rent, and by more than most people expect. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages $3,401 a month in Boston and $2,396 in Dubai on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 30% less here. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes $5,918 against $4,513 a month, which is often the number that settles it for families.

3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics

Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about $1,518 a month in Boston against $1,145 here, so with rent included the month costs about $4,919 in Boston and $3,541 in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $13 instead of $28, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is $82 instead of $120, and a monthly transport pass is $75 instead of $90.

For a family of four the picture is much the same, with everyday costs before rent of about $5,517 a month in Boston and $4,027 in Dubai, and about $11,435 against $8,540 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Dubai, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.

4. School fees: Dubai wins by $18,063 per child

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $36,004 per child in Boston and $17,941 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about $2,900 in Boston against $859 here. With two children in primary school that is about $36,100 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 40.1 in Boston, so it is well under half of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Boston 56.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about $28,800 more in Dubai

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on $250,000 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about $207,509 in Dubai and about $178,694 in Boston, a gap of $28,815 in a single year, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because more of your income stays with you and the month costs less.

The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and nonstop flights from Boston keep home close whenever you need it.

Questions people ask me

Do Americans still pay US tax if they live in Dubai?

Yes, US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. For 2026 the IRS lets you exclude up to $132,900 of pay earned from work done abroad if you qualify, under what is called the foreign earned income exclusion. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

Is Dubai cheaper than Boston?

For one person, yes, by about $1,378 a month once rent is included, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices. Rent is the biggest single difference, and school fees widen the gap further for families.

Is Dubai safe for families?

Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 40.1 in Boston, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 56 in Boston.

How long is the flight from Boston to Dubai?

About 12 hours 15 minutes nonstop from Boston with Emirates, which runs 6 flights a week on the route.

Is moving to Dubai from Boston worth it?

Boston will always be Boston. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
