ZurichvsDubai
Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Zurich right now, a founder is paying for a quick lunch that cost as much as a full dinner in many cities and quietly noting how the bills keep climbing, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Europe make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in Swiss francs, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Zurich comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a CHF 204,775 income, Swiss income taxes and social insurance take about CHF 54,575 a year, while Dubai takes CHF 0.
Living costs: one person spends about CHF 3,946 a month in Zurich and CHF 2,900 in Dubai, rent included, which is about CHF 12,542 a year back in your pocket.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about CHF 169,971 stays with you in Dubai against about CHF 102,855 in Zurich.
Families: international primary school costs about CHF 34,446 a year per child in Zurich and CHF 14,695 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Zurich give it 69.
Getting home: 14 flights a week to Zurich, with Emirates.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about CHF 54,575 a year
Dubai still wins this one, though Switzerland taxes far more gently than most of Europe, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals while Zurich residents pay tax to three levels of government and social insurance on top.
Residents of the city of Zurich pay a federal income tax, a Canton of Zurich tax and a City of Zurich tax, and for 2026 the last two are charged at 95% and 119% of a basic cantonal tax. Employees also pay 5.3% for old-age, disability and income-loss insurance on all pay, plus unemployment insurance of 1.1% up to a ceiling. Mandatory workplace pension contributions are savings that you get back, so I have left them out, and I have left church tax out as well.
Picture a founder in Zurich taking CHF 204,775, which is about $250,000 at 0.8191 francs to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax at all three levels comes to about CHF 42,091 and social insurance to about CHF 12,484, so roughly CHF 54,575 goes every year, and on each extra CHF 1,000 they earn about CHF 380 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 27% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Swiss income tax is charged on people who are Swiss tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dubai wins by about CHF 457 a month
Dubai wins on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages CHF 2,420 a month in Zurich and CHF 1,963 in Dubai on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 19% less here. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes CHF 4,806 against CHF 3,697 a month, which is often the number that settles it for families.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about CHF 1,526 a month in Zurich against CHF 938 here, so with rent included the month costs about CHF 3,946 in Zurich and CHF 2,900 in Dubai.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about CHF 5,700 a month in Zurich and CHF 3,299 in Dubai, and about CHF 10,457 against CHF 6,995 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Dubai, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by CHF 19,750 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about CHF 34,446 per child in Zurich and CHF 14,695 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about CHF 2,909 in Zurich against CHF 704 here. With two children in primary school that is about CHF 39,500 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 24.3 in Zurich, so it is about two thirds of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Zurich 69. Zurich is a very safe city by European standards, and Dubai is safer still.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about CHF 67,115 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on CHF 204,775 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about CHF 169,971 in Dubai and about CHF 102,855 in Zurich, a gap of CHF 67,115 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because most of the gap is tax.
