Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Limerick right now, a founder is crossing the Shannon with a rent bill on their mind and a payslip that takes more than half of every extra euro, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Ireland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Limerick comes out ahead.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Irish income tax, USC and PRSI take about €96,416 a year, while Dubai takes €0.

Living costs: one person spends about €2,663 a month in Limerick and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, so Limerick is about €406 a month cheaper before tax comes into it.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €88,309 in Limerick.

Families: Numbeo shows international primary school at about €2,020 a year per child in Limerick against €15,549 in Dubai, though it rests on only a few reports, so check local fees.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Limerick give it 44.

Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop to Dublin every day, and from Limerick you connect or travel through Dublin.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €96,416 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Ireland takes a share of the same salary three times, through income tax, the Universal Social Charge and PRSI social insurance.

For 2026 a single person in Ireland pays 20% income tax on the first €44,000 and 40% on everything above it, less personal and employee tax credits of €2,000 each. The Universal Social Charge (USC) adds 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% up to €28,700, 3% up to €70,044 and 8% above that, and employee PRSI takes about 4.2% of all earnings.

Picture a founder in Limerick taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €73,870, the Universal Social Charge to about €13,400 and PRSI to about €9,182, so roughly €96,416 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €522 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 45% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Irish income tax is charged on people who are Irish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Limerick is about €360 a month cheaper

I would rather show this one straight: Limerick is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,717 a month in Limerick against €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about €360 a month, or €4,316 a year. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €2,196 against €3,911 a month, so Limerick stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is small next to the tax bill below.

Numbeo notes that its Limerick figures rest on a small number of reports (24 contributors in the past 18 months), so treat the rents as a guide and check current listings before you decide.

3. Everyday costs: Limerick is a little cheaper

One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €946 a month in Limerick against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €2,663 in Limerick and €3,069 in Dubai. Limerick comes out about €406 a month cheaper on that measure, and the next sections show why the tax line matters more.

The small things look like this: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is €18 in Limerick and €11 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is €75 in Limerick and €71 in Dubai, and a dozen eggs is €4.84 in Limerick and €2.89 in Dubai. Not every item is cheaper here, and I would rather you saw that than assume it.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €3,447 a month in Limerick and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €5,643 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Limerick, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.

4. School fees: about €13,530 a year less per child in Limerick

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about €2,020 per child in Limerick on Numbeo’s figures and €15,549 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about €757 in Limerick against €744 here. School fees are not where the case for Dubai is won, and the Limerick figure rests on only a few reports, so it is worth checking the fees at the schools you have in mind. With two children in primary school the difference is about €27,059 a year on these numbers, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 43.9 in Limerick, so it is well under half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Limerick 44.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about €91,539 more in Dubai

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €88,309 in Limerick, a gap of €91,539 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.
