Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Wollongong right now, a founder is on the early train to Sydney with the escarpment behind them and an income tax bill and a Medicare levy on their mind, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from Australian cities make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in Australian dollars, so you can judge for yourself.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on an A$351,568 income, Australian income tax and the Medicare levy take about A$131,000 a year, while Dubai takes A$0.

Living costs: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs about A$1,748 a month in Wollongong and A$3,369 in Dubai, and Numbeo has no everyday-cost estimate for Wollongong, so that comparison is left out.

What you keep: after tax alone, about A$350,000 stays with you in Dubai against about A$221,000 in Wollongong.

Families: international primary school costs about A$28,500 a year per child in Wollongong and A$25,230 in Dubai.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Wollongong give it 36.

Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, so from Wollongong you connect through Sydney.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about A$131,000 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Australia takes a share of the same income through income tax and then a 2% Medicare levy on top.

For 2026-27 the ATO taxes nothing on the first A$18,200, then 15% up to A$45,000, 30% up to A$135,000, 37% up to A$190,000 and 45% on everything above that. The Medicare levy of 2% is charged in addition to those rates.

Picture a founder in Wollongong taking A$351,568, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about A$124,076 and the Medicare levy to about A$7,031, so roughly A$131,107 goes every year, and on each extra A$1,000 they earn about A$470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 37% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Australian income tax is charged on people who are Australian residents for tax purposes, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residency rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Wollongong is cheaper by about A$1,620 a month

Rent is the one line where Wollongong comes in lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages A$1,748 a month in Wollongong and A$3,369 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, and three bedrooms in the center come to A$2,777 against A$6,347. The tax line below is where that gets made up, and it is far larger.

3. Everyday costs: the small things mostly favor Dubai

Numbeo does not publish a single-person or family monthly cost estimate for Wollongong, so I have left the all-in monthly total out rather than guess, and compared the individual prices instead.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is A$18 instead of A$24, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is A$115 instead of A$117, a dozen eggs are A$4.70 instead of A$5.65, and a fast-food combo is A$13.40 instead of A$14.67.

For a family, three-bedroom rent in the city center is A$2,777 a month in Wollongong against A$6,347 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices. Numbeo has no family monthly cost estimate for Wollongong, so I have not compared everyday costs for a family of four.

4. School fees: Dubai wins by A$3,261 per child

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about A$28,500 per child in Wollongong and A$25,230 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about A$3,045 in Wollongong against A$1,208 here. With two children in primary school that is about A$6,500 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 48.2 in Wollongong, which is about 66% lower. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Wollongong 36.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about A$131,000 more in Dubai

Numbeo does not publish a single-person or family monthly cost estimate for Wollongong, so I have left that comparison out rather than guess. What the numbers do show is the tax: on A$351,568 a person in Wollongong keeps about A$220,000 after income tax and the Medicare levy, while in Dubai the full A$351,568 stays with them, a gap of A$131,107 in a single year before either city’s living costs.
