Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Belfast right now, a founder is leaving the Titanic Quarter after a long day and looking at what remains of the month once the deductions have landed, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across the UK make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Belfast comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, UK income tax and National Insurance take about £76,100 a year, while Dubai takes £0.
Living costs: one person spends about £1,722 a month in Belfast and £2,648 in Dubai, rent included, so day-to-day life costs about £11,110 a year more in Dubai, a gap the tax saving more than covers.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about £155,182 stays with you in Dubai against about £90,210 in Belfast.
Families: international primary school costs about £13,278 a year per child in Belfast and £13,417 in Dubai, so school costs about £139 a year less per child in Belfast.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Belfast give it 42.
Getting home: Emirates has no nonstop flight from Belfast, so you connect to its nonstop flights from Manchester or London Heathrow.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about £76,100 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while the UK takes a share of the same salary twice, once through income tax and again through National Insurance.
For 2026/27 the UK gives you a personal allowance of £12,570, taxes income above that at 20% up to £50,270, then at 40% up to £125,140 and at 45% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above. According to gov.uk, these income tax rates and bands apply in Northern Ireland as they do in England.
Picture a founder in Belfast taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £70,334 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £76,084 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 41% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

UK income tax is charged on people who are UK tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Belfast costs about £922 a month less
Rent is where Belfast comes out ahead on the sticker price. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £870 a month in Belfast and £1,792 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 106% more in Dubai. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes £1,439 in Belfast against £3,375 a month in Dubai. Over a year that rent gap is worth about £11,065, which is real money until you set it beside the £76,084 of tax in the first section, because the tax gap is several times larger.
3. Everyday costs: about the same in both cities
Everyday costs are close to level. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about £852 a month in Belfast against £856 here, so with rent included the month costs about £1,722 in Belfast and £2,648 in Dubai.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about £3,020 a month in Belfast and £3,012 in Dubai, and about £4,460 against £6,386 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Month to month, Belfast costs less than Dubai, and that is fine, because the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: about £139 a year less per child in Belfast
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about £13,278 per child in Belfast and £13,417 in Dubai, so primary school is where Belfast comes out ahead, although a month of preschool runs about £1,051 in Belfast against £642 here. School fees are not where the case for Dubai is won, and with two children in primary school the difference is about £300 a year, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 48.6 in Belfast, so Dubai’s score is about 33% of the Belfast level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Belfast 42.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about £65,000 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about £155,182 in Dubai and about £90,210 in Belfast, a gap of £64,972 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because the tax gap is larger than the whole difference, since Belfast costs less to live in month to month.

Dubai ✓You are still one flight from home
Moving here does not mean leaving the UK behind. Emirates does not fly nonstop from Belfast, so the trip connects, and the nearest nonstop Emirates departures are from Manchester (21 Emirates flights a week, about 7 hours 10 minutes) or London Heathrow (42 flights a week). The total time depends on how you connect, but the nonstop leg to Dubai is the part Emirates runs every day, so family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in Belfast. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about £76,100 a year on £186,958, and that is before you count a single bill.
The founder who chose Belfast for the lower living costs. Belfast is cheaper month to month, but UK income tax and National Insurance take about 41% of a £186,958 income, and in Dubai the tax is zero.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and Emirates flies nonstop to Dubai from Manchester or London Heathrow, so the UK stays within reach whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay UK tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe UK tax depends on whether you count as a UK tax resident, which the UK decides using a set of tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than Belfast?
Not month to month. For one person Belfast costs about £926 a month less once rent is included, on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices. What changes the picture is tax, because on a £186,958 income you keep about £65,000 more a year in Dubai, as the UAE does not charge income tax on individuals.
Is Dubai safe for families?
Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 48.6 in Belfast, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 42 in Belfast.
How long is the flight from Belfast to Dubai?
Emirates does not fly nonstop from Belfast, so the trip connects. The nearest nonstop Emirates departures are from Manchester (21 Emirates flights a week, about 7 hours 10 minutes) or London Heathrow (42 flights a week), and the total journey time depends on how you connect.
Is moving to Dubai from Belfast worth it?
Belfast has a lot going for it. The real question is whether the tax bill still lets you build the life you want, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
