Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Newcastle right now, a founder is watching the coal ships wait off the harbor and working out how much of this year’s income will go to income tax and the Medicare levy, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from Australian cities make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in Australian dollars, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on an A$351,568 income, Australian income tax and the Medicare levy take about A$131,000 a year, while Dubai takes A$0.
Living costs: one person spends about A$3,862 a month in Newcastle and A$4,980 in Dubai, rent included, which is about A$13,000 a year back in your pocket.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about A$292,000 stays with you in Dubai against about A$174,000 in Newcastle.
Families: preschool costs about A$3,045 a month per child in Newcastle and A$1,208 in Dubai, though primary fees are lower in Newcastle at A$18,819 a year against A$25,230.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Newcastle give it 36.
Getting home: Emirates flies to Dubai from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, so from Newcastle you connect through Sydney.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about A$131,000 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Australia takes a share of the same income through income tax and then a 2% Medicare levy on top.
For 2026-27 the ATO taxes nothing on the first A$18,200, then 15% up to A$45,000, 30% up to A$135,000, 37% up to A$190,000 and 45% on everything above that. The Medicare levy of 2% is charged in addition to those rates.
Picture a founder in Newcastle taking A$351,568, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about A$124,076 and the Medicare levy to about A$7,031, so roughly A$131,107 goes every year, and on each extra A$1,000 they earn about A$470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 37% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Australian income tax is charged on people who are Australian residents for tax purposes, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residency rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Newcastle is cheaper by about A$1,200 a month
Rent is the one line where Newcastle comes in lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages A$2,191 a month in Newcastle and A$3,369 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, and three bedrooms in the center come to A$3,504 against A$6,347. The tax line below is where that gets made up, and it is far larger.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about A$1,671 a month in Newcastle against A$1,610 in Dubai. With rent included the month comes to about A$3,862 in Newcastle and A$4,980 in Dubai, so the month costs about A$1,118 less in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is A$18 instead of A$30, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is A$115 instead of A$146, a dozen eggs are A$4.70 instead of A$6.55, and a fast-food combo is A$13.40 instead of A$14.67.

For a family of four the picture is much the same, with everyday costs before rent of about A$6,022 a month in Newcastle and A$5,663 in Dubai, and about A$9,526 against A$12,010 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. Rent keeps the month a little lower in Newcastle, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: primary is cheaper in Newcastle, preschool is cheaper in Dubai
School is a mixed picture, and I would rather show it straight. A year at an international primary school costs about A$18,819 per child in Newcastle and A$25,230 in Dubai, so primary fees are lower in Newcastle. Preschool goes the other way, with a month costing about A$3,045 in Newcastle against A$1,208 in Dubai, which is about A$1,837 a month less per child for families with little ones.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 47.8 in Newcastle, which is about 66% lower. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Newcastle 36.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about A$118,000 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on A$351,568 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about A$291,814 in Dubai and about A$174,120 in Newcastle, a gap of A$117,694 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the biggest line above, because the tax you do not pay is far larger than any difference in the month.
