Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Seattle right now, a founder is paying close to $2,500 a month for a one-bedroom apartment and wondering whether the no-tax-on-wages line is really the whole story, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Seattle founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: Washington does not tax wages, so on state tax alone Seattle and Dubai are level at $0, and the difference shows up everywhere else.
Living costs: one person spends about $4,018 a month in Seattle and $3,541 in Dubai, rent included, which is about $5,700 a year back in your pocket.
What you keep: after a year of living costs, about $207,509 stays with you in Dubai against about $201,786 in Seattle, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way.
Families: international primary school costs about $31,129 a year per child in Seattle and $17,941 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Seattle give it 38.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop from Seattle to Dubai with 6 flights a week, in about 15 hours.

All figures in US dollars. Washington does not tax wages; rent, living costs and safety from Numbeo, October 2026. Not tax advice.
1. Income tax: level on state tax, so the case rests on everything else
Washington does not tax wages, so on state tax alone Seattle and Dubai both come in at $0, and I would rather say that plainly than dress it up. The federal return is a separate matter, because US citizens file one wherever they live and the IRS rates for 2026 climb in steps from 10% to 37%, so federal tax is the one bill that follows you in both places.
What that means in practice is that Seattle is an honest test of the whole comparison. With the state tax line level, the difference has to come from what a normal month costs, what a child’s school costs and how the walk home feels, and the rest of this page shows those side by side.
Washington does not tax wages, and US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dubai is slightly cheaper
Dubai edges it on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages $2,454 a month in Seattle and $2,396 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 2% less here. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes $4,785 against $4,513 a month, which is often the number that settles it for families.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about $1,564 a month in Seattle against $1,145 here, so with rent included the month costs about $4,018 in Seattle and $3,541 in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $13 instead of $25, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is $82 instead of $100, and a pound of chicken is $4.15 instead of $8.43.

For a family of four the picture is much the same, with everyday costs before rent of about $5,622 a month in Seattle and $4,027 in Dubai, and about $10,407 against $8,540 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Dubai, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by $13,188 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $31,129 per child in Seattle and $17,941 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about $3,012 in Seattle against $859 here. With two children in primary school that is about $26,400 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 55.4 in Seattle, so it is less than a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Seattle 38.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about $5,700 more in Dubai
Put living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on $250,000 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of living costs they keep about $207,509 in Dubai and about $201,786 in Seattle, a gap of $5,723 in a single year, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because the month costs less and the school bill is lower.
