Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated September 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in London right now, a founder is opening a payslip and wondering where close to half of their last pay rise went, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of British founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you the UAE is better, I have put the two countries head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, UK income tax and National Insurance take about £76,100 a year, while the UAE takes £0.
Living costs: one person spends about £1,843 a month in the UK and £1,852 in the UAE, rent included, so the month costs about the same and the difference is what you keep.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about £165,000 stays with you in the UAE against about £88,800 in the UK.
Families: international primary school costs about £17,104 a year per child in the UK and £9,371 in the UAE.
Safety: UAE residents rate walking alone at night 85 out of 100, while people in the UK give it 42.
Getting home: Emirates flies to London Heathrow 42 times a week, in about 7 hours 25 minutes.

1. Income tax: the UAE wins by about £76,100 a year
The UAE wins this one outright, because it does not levy income tax on individuals, while the UK takes a share of the same salary twice, once through income tax and again through National Insurance.
For 2026/27 the UK gives you a personal allowance of £12,570, taxes income above that at 20% up to £50,270, then at 40% up to £125,140 and at 45% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above.
Picture a founder taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £70,334 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £76,084 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £470 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 41% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

UK income tax is charged on people who are UK tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: close to level
Rent is the closest line, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in a city center averages £1,007 a month in the UK and £1,142 in the UAE on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices, and three bedrooms come to £1,645 against £2,007. It is the one place the UK comes in a little lower, and the next section shows where that gets made up.
3. Everyday costs: the UAE wins on the basics
The UAE wins on day-to-day spending. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about £835 a month in the UK against £710 here, so with rent included the month comes to about £1,843 in the UK and £1,852 in the UAE, which is level even with the higher rent.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A monthly transport pass is £36 instead of £77, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is £7 instead of £16, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is £40 instead of £65, and basic utilities run £143 against £242.

For a family of four the picture is much the same, with everyday costs before rent of about £2,897 a month in the UK and £2,496 in the UAE, and about £4,542 against £4,503 once a three-bedroom apartment in a city center is included. The month costs about the same, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: the UAE wins by £7,733 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about £17,104 per child in the UK and £9,371 in the UAE, while a month of preschool runs about £1,304 in the UK against £429 here. With two children in primary school that is about £15,500 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: the UAE wins, and residents feel it
The UAE wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 13.7 against 48.2 in the UK, so it is under a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, UAE residents score it 85 out of 100 and people in the UK 42.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about £76,000 more in the UAE
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in a city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about £164,727 in the UAE and about £88,762 in the UK, a gap of £75,965 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because more of your income stays with you and the month costs about the same.

Moving here does not mean leaving the UK behind. Emirates flies between Dubai and London Heathrow 42 times a week, which is six flights a day, and the journey takes about 7 hours 25 minutes, so family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within easy reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in the UK. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about £76,100 a year on £186,958, and that is before you count a single bill.
The family weighing private school. Two children in international primary school cost about £15,500 a year less in the UAE, which changes the whole budget.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and 42 flights a week to Heathrow keep the UK close whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay UK tax if I live in Dubai?
Whether you owe UK tax depends on whether you count as a UK tax resident, which the UK decides using a set of tests based on the days you spend in the country and your ties to it, so it is worth getting the answer in writing before you move. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than the UK?
For one person the month comes out about level, at £1,852 in the UAE against £1,843 in the UK including rent, on Numbeo’s September 2026 prices. Food, transport, utilities and school fees all cost less in the UAE, and the biggest difference of all is tax.
Is Dubai safe for families?
The UAE’s crime index is 13.7 against 48.2 in the UK, and residents rate walking alone at night 85 out of 100 compared with 42 in the UK.

Is moving to Dubai from the UK worth it?
Home will always be home. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
