Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Walking down from the Castle on a grey Edinburgh morning, a founder is opening a payslip and wondering where close to half of their last pay rise went, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Scotland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in pounds, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Edinburgh comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a £186,958 income, Scottish income tax and National Insurance take about £83,124 a year, while Dubai takes £0.
Rent: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £1,202 a month in Edinburgh and £1,792 in Dubai’s city center, so Edinburgh is about £590 a month cheaper on rent alone.
Living costs: one person spends about £2,088 a month in Edinburgh and £2,648 in Dubai, rent included, although on everyday costs alone Dubai is lower (£856 against £886).
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about £155,182 stays with you in Dubai against about £78,780 in Edinburgh.
Families: international primary school costs about £18,864 a year per child in Edinburgh and £13,417 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Edinburgh give it 64.
Getting home: Emirates flies to Edinburgh 7 times a week, in about 7 hours 25 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about £83,124 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Scotland sets its own income tax rates and, together with UK National Insurance, takes a share of the same salary twice.
For 2026/27 Scotland gives you the standard personal allowance of £12,570, then taxes income at 19% up to £16,537, 20% up to £29,526, 21% up to £43,662, 42% up to £75,000, 45% up to £125,140 and 48% above it, and withdraws the allowance completely once income reaches £125,140. National Insurance adds 8% on earnings between roughly £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% on everything above.
Picture a founder in Edinburgh taking £186,958, which is about $250,000 at the Federal Reserve’s mid-September rate. Income tax comes to about £77,374 and National Insurance to about £5,750, so roughly £83,124 goes every year, and on each extra £1,000 they earn about £500 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 44% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Scottish income tax is charged on people who count as Scottish taxpayers, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Edinburgh is about £590 a month cheaper
I would rather show this one straight: Edinburgh is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages £1,202 a month in Edinburgh against £1,792 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about £590 a month, or £7,080 a year. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes £2,068 against £3,375 a month, so Edinburgh stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is much smaller than the tax bill above.
3. Everyday costs: how a normal month compares
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about £886 a month in Edinburgh against £856 in Dubai, so with rent included the month costs about £2,088 in Edinburgh and £2,648 in Dubai. The month is cheaper in Edinburgh, and the question is how much of your income is left to pay for it once the tax has gone.

The small things are what new arrivals notice first, and they look like this: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is £18 in Edinburgh and £10 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is £79 in Edinburgh against £61 in Dubai, a dozen eggs is £3.78 in Edinburgh and £2.50 in Dubai, a pound of chicken is £3.18 in Edinburgh and £3.10 in Dubai, a pound of beef is £5.40 in Edinburgh and £4.40 in Dubai, a fast-food combo meal is £7.86 in Edinburgh against £7.13 in Dubai and a monthly transport pass is £73 in Edinburgh against £56 in Dubai.

For a family of four the numbers follow the same pattern, with everyday costs before rent of about £3,095 a month in Edinburgh and £3,012 in Dubai, and about £5,163 against £6,386 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Edinburgh, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by £5,447 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about £18,864 per child in Edinburgh and £13,417 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about £1,330 in Edinburgh against £642 here. With two children in primary school that is about £10,900 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 30.4 in Edinburgh, which puts Dubai at a little over half of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Edinburgh 64.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about £76,402 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on £186,958 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about £155,182 in Dubai and about £78,780 in Edinburgh, a gap of £76,402 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because the month is cheaper in Edinburgh while the tax bill is far larger.
