Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Dallas right now, a founder is stuck in North Dallas traffic on the way to a client meeting and wondering whether no state income tax is the whole story, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Dallas founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: Texas has no state income tax, so on state tax alone Dallas and Dubai are level at $0, and the case for Dubai rests on everything else.
Living costs: one person spends about $3,071 a month in Dallas and $3,541 in Dubai, rent included, so Dallas is about $5,600 a year lower, mostly because rent is lower there.
What you keep: after a year of living costs, about $213,152 stays with you in Dallas against about $207,509 in Dubai, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way.
Families: international primary school costs about $24,380 a year per child in Dallas and $17,941 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Dallas give it 39.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop from Dallas to Dubai with 7 flights a week, in about 15 hours.

All figures in US dollars. Texas charges no state income tax; rent, living costs and safety from Numbeo, October 2026. Not tax advice.
1. Income tax: level on state tax, so the case rests on everything else
Texas does not tax personal income, so on state tax alone Dallas and Dubai both come in at $0, and I would rather say that plainly than dress it up. The federal return is a separate matter, because US citizens file one wherever they live and the IRS rates for 2026 climb in steps from 10% to 37%, so federal tax is the one bill that follows you in both places.
What that means in practice is that Dallas is an honest test of the whole comparison. With the state tax line level, the difference has to come from what a normal month costs, what a child’s school costs and how the walk home feels, and the rest of this page shows those side by side, including the lines where Dallas comes out ahead.
Texas charges no state personal income tax on individuals, and US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dallas is cheaper by about $600 a month
Rent is the one line where Dallas comes in clearly lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages $1,783 a month in Dallas and $2,396 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, and three bedrooms in the center come to $3,769 against $4,513. The lines below, everyday costs, school and safety, are where the case for Dubai is built.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics
Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about $1,288 a month in Dallas against $1,145 here, so with rent included the month costs about $3,071 in Dallas and $3,541 in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $13 instead of $21, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is $82 instead of $90, and a dozen eggs are $3.34 instead of $4.80.

For a family of four the month is a different story, with everyday costs before rent of about $4,709 a month in Dallas and $4,027 in Dubai, and about $8,478 against $8,540 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. That is close to level, and the school fees below are where the family numbers tilt toward Dubai.
4. School fees: Dubai wins by $6,439 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $24,380 per child in Dallas and $17,941 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about $2,084 in Dallas against $859 here. With two children in primary school that is about $12,900 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 51.6 in Dallas, so it is about a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Dallas 39.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about $5,600 more in Dallas
Put living costs together and I would rather be straight with you. Take a single person on $250,000 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of living costs they keep about $213,152 in Dallas and about $207,509 in Dubai, a gap of $5,643 in a single year in Dallas’s favor, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way. The money side comes down to rent, and Dubai pulls ahead on the rest of this page, with school fees $6,439 a child lower and a walk home that residents rate 83 out of 100 against 39 in Dallas.
