Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in Atlanta right now, a founder is sitting in rush-hour traffic on the Connector and doing the math on a Georgia tax bill, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Atlanta founders and professionals make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on $250,000, Georgia income tax takes about $11,700 a year, while Dubai takes $0.

Living costs: one person spends about $3,437 a month in Atlanta and $3,541 in Dubai, rent included, so Atlanta is about $1,200 a year lower on living costs alone, and the tax line more than reverses that.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about $207,509 stays with you in Dubai against about $197,034 in Atlanta, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way.

Families: international primary school costs about $22,531 a year per child in Atlanta and $17,941 in Dubai.

Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Atlanta give it 25.

Getting home: Emirates does not fly nonstop from Atlanta, so the trip to Dubai is a one-stop connection.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about $11,700 a year

Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Georgia takes a flat 4.99% of taxable income for 2026.

Georgia lets a single filer subtract a standard deduction, which is $15,000 for 2026, so a founder in Atlanta on $250,000 has $235,000 taxed at 4.99%, and the state bill comes to about $11,727 a year. On every extra $1,000 they earn, about $49.90 goes to Georgia, and that is before federal tax, which US citizens file wherever they live, and before payroll taxes.

Georgia income tax is charged on Georgia residents, so once your home is in Dubai there is no state line waiting to replace it, although US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

2. Rent: Atlanta is cheaper by about $300 a month

Rent is the one line where Atlanta comes in lower, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages $2,089 a month in Atlanta and $2,396 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, and three bedrooms in the center come to $3,500 against $4,513. The tax line is where that gets made up, and it is larger.

3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on the basics

Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about $1,348 a month in Atlanta against $1,145 here, so with rent included the month costs about $3,437 in Atlanta and $3,541 in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $13 instead of $33, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is $82 instead of $110, and a pound of chicken is $4.15 instead of $6.65.

For a family of four the month is a different story, with everyday costs before rent of about $4,917 a month in Atlanta and $4,027 in Dubai, and about $8,417 against $8,540 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. That is close to level, and the school fees below are where the family numbers tilt toward Dubai.

4. School fees: Dubai wins by $4,590 per child

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $22,531 per child in Atlanta and $17,941 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about $1,850 in Atlanta against $859 here. With two children in primary school that is about $9,200 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it

Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 64.2 in Atlanta, so it is about a quarter of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Atlanta 25.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about $10,500 more in Dubai

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on $250,000 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about $207,509 in Dubai and about $197,034 in Atlanta, a gap of $10,475 in a single year, before federal tax, which US citizens file either way. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because more of your income stays with you even though the monthly bill itself is a little lower in Atlanta.

Who should make the move?

The founder earning well in Atlanta. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the state tax line alone is worth about $11,700 a year on $250,000, and that is before you count a single bill.

The family weighing private school. Two children in international primary school cost about $9,200 a year less in Dubai, which changes the whole budget.

The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and a one-stop connection keeps home within reach whenever you need it.

Questions people ask me

Do Americans still pay US tax if they live in Dubai?

Yes, US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. For 2026 the IRS lets you exclude up to $132,900 of pay earned from work done abroad if you qualify, under what is called the foreign earned income exclusion. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.

Is Dubai cheaper than Atlanta?

On the monthly bill alone, Atlanta is about $104 a month lower for one person once rent is included, on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices. Once Georgia income tax is counted, Dubai leaves you about $10,500 better off over a year on $250,000, and school fees are lower in Dubai too.

Is Dubai safe for families?

Dubai’s crime index is 16.2 against 64.2 in Atlanta, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 25 in Atlanta.

How long is the flight from Atlanta to Dubai?

Emirates does not fly nonstop from Atlanta, so the trip is a one-stop connection and the total time depends on the connection you choose. Check emirates.com for current routes and times.

Is moving to Dubai from Atlanta worth it?

Atlanta will always be Atlanta. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
