Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
On a windy evening on the Salthill promenade in Galway, a founder is working out how much of this year's income will actually reach their account, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Ireland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Galway comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Irish income tax, USC and PRSI take about €96,416 a year, while Dubai takes €0.
Living costs: one person spends about €3,074 a month in Galway and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, so the two are about level before tax comes into it.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €83,367 in Galway.
Families: preschool costs about €890 a month in Galway and €744 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Galway give it 57.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop to Dublin every day, and from Galway you connect or travel through Dublin.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €96,416 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Ireland takes a share of the same salary three times, through income tax, the Universal Social Charge and PRSI social insurance.
For 2026 a single person in Ireland pays 20% income tax on the first €44,000 and 40% on everything above it, less personal and employee tax credits of €2,000 each. The Universal Social Charge (USC) adds 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% up to €28,700, 3% up to €70,044 and 8% above that, and employee PRSI takes about 4.2% of all earnings.
Picture a founder in Galway taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €73,870, the Universal Social Charge to about €13,400 and PRSI to about €9,182, so roughly €96,416 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €522 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 45% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Irish income tax is charged on people who are Irish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: level
Rent is a dead heat, and I would rather show it straight. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €2,077 a month in Galway and €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €3,171 against €3,911 a month, so Galway stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is small next to the tax bill below.
Numbeo notes that its Galway figures rest on a small number of reports (44 contributors in the past 18 months), so treat the rents as a guide and check current listings before you decide.
3. Everyday costs: level
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €998 a month in Galway against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €3,074 in Galway and €3,069 in Dubai.

The small things look like this: a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is €20 in Galway and €11 in Dubai, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is €89 in Galway and €71 in Dubai, and a dozen eggs is €3.79 in Galway and €2.89 in Dubai. Not every item is cheaper here, and I would rather you saw that than assume it.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €3,551 a month in Galway and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €6,723 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Galway, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. Childcare: Dubai wins on preschool by about €146 a month
Numbeo has no international primary school figure for Galway, so the clearest family comparison is preschool, which costs about €890 a month in Galway and €744 in Dubai. That is about €1,746 a year per child, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 31.2 in Galway, so it is about half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Galway 57.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about €96,500 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €83,367 in Galway, a gap of €96,481 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.

Moving here does not mean leaving Ireland behind. Emirates flies nonstop between Dubai and Dublin every day, and that journey takes about 8 hours 5 minutes, so from Galway you would connect or travel through Dublin, and family, friends and a long weekend back home all stay within reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder or professional earning well in Galway. If your income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the tax line alone is worth about €96,416 a year on €216,675, and that is before you count a single bill.
The professional paying more than half of every extra euro. At this income about 52% goes in tax, USC and PRSI, while in Dubai none of it does.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and daily flights to Dublin keep Ireland close whenever you need it.
Questions people ask me
Do I still pay Irish tax if I live in Dubai?
