Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated October 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Cork right now, a founder is walking back along the River Lee after a day of work, doing the sums on a rent bill and a payslip that takes more than half of every extra euro, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of founders and professionals from across Ireland make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two places head to head on the things people ask me about most, all in euros, so you can judge for yourself, including the places where Cork comes out ahead.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on a €216,675 income, Irish income tax, USC and PRSI take about €96,416 a year, while Dubai takes €0.
Living costs: one person spends about €2,832 a month in Cork and €3,069 in Dubai, rent included, so Cork is about €237 a month cheaper before tax comes into it.
What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about €179,848 stays with you in Dubai against about €86,285 in Cork.
Families: Numbeo shows international primary school at about €4,746 a year per child in Cork against €15,549 in Dubai, though it rests on only a few reports, so check local fees.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while people in Cork give it 51.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop to Dublin every day, and from Cork you connect or travel through Dublin.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about €96,416 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while Ireland takes a share of the same salary three times, through income tax, the Universal Social Charge and PRSI social insurance.
For 2026 a single person in Ireland pays 20% income tax on the first €44,000 and 40% on everything above it, less personal and employee tax credits of €2,000 each. The Universal Social Charge (USC) adds 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% up to €28,700, 3% up to €70,044 and 8% above that, and employee PRSI takes about 4.2% of all earnings.
Picture a founder in Cork taking €216,675, which is about $250,000 at $1.1538 to the euro, the Federal Reserve rate for 16 September 2026. Income tax comes to about €73,870, the Universal Social Charge to about €13,400 and PRSI to about €9,182, so roughly €96,416 goes every year, and on each extra €1,000 they earn about €522 goes with it. Across the full year that is about 45% of the whole income gone before a single bill is paid.

Irish income tax is charged on people who are Irish tax residents, so what applies to you once your home is in Dubai depends on the residence rules that apply to your own situation. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Cork is about €261 a month cheaper
I would rather show this one straight: Cork is cheaper on rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages €1,816 a month in Cork against €2,077 in Dubai on Numbeo’s October 2026 prices, a difference of about €261 a month, or €3,131 a year. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes €2,884 against €3,911 a month, so Cork stays cheaper for families too, although that gap is small next to the tax bill below.
3. Everyday costs: level
One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about €1,016 a month in Cork against €992 here, so with rent included the month costs about €2,832 in Cork and €3,069 in Dubai. Cork comes out about €237 a month cheaper on that measure, and the next sections show why the tax line matters more.

For a family of four the everyday costs before rent are about €3,621 a month in Cork and €3,490 in Dubai, and about €6,505 against €7,402 once a three-bedroom apartment in the city center is included. The month costs less in Cork, and the real difference is how much of your income is left to pay for it.
4. School fees: about €10,803 a year less per child in Cork
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school. A year at an international primary school costs about €4,746 per child in Cork on Numbeo’s figures and €15,549 in Dubai, while a month of preschool runs about €953 in Cork against €744 here. School fees are not where the case for Dubai is won, and the Cork figure rests on only a few reports, so it is worth checking the fees at the schools you have in mind. With two children in primary school the difference is about €21,606 a year on these numbers, which is small next to the tax.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against 36.9 in Cork, so it is well under half the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and people in Cork 51.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. What you keep: about €93,563 more in Dubai
Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on €216,675 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in the city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about €179,848 in Dubai and about €86,285 in Cork, a gap of €93,563 in a single year. It is one number, but it lines up with the first section, because almost all of the gap is tax.

Questions people ask me
